Once the mournful trumpets, drums and elaborately decorated floats of the city’s famous easter celebration Semana Santa are over, Sevilla is getting prepared for its next special event of the year: Seville Fair in in April. Dating back to 1846, the fair has become one of the most popular and famous events in Sevilla. For one week people are dancing, socialising and drinking on the fairground and streets, women are dressed with colourful flamenco dresses and flowers in their hair, men with traditional suits known as “el traje corto”…
This is how people celebrate into spring in Sevilla. It is officially inaugurated on Monday night where people head to the “portada”, a spectacular decorated entrance of the playground, to see thousands of lights being turned on simultaneously at midnight. It’s time to open the sherry and let the debauched celebrations begin. The rest of the week continues with parades around the festival ground of men on horsebacks, impressive bullfights at the historic Plaza de Toros, flamenco dancing and loud music until early in the morning. The celebrations come to an end the following Sunday with spectacular fireworks along the river – and it seems like the beginning of summer is being marked.
