R.T.A. 25 Years of history

Maria Grazia Dotti who is founder and CEO of RTA Group Spain tells us in this interesting interview how everything started.

In 2013 R.T.A. celebrated its 25th Anniversary…it was summer of 1988 when Italian born Maria Grazia Dotti decided that after almost 15 years working for Italian, French and Spanish tour operators and incoming agencies in Spain, she had enough experience to have her own Company.

Commemorating the 25 years of hard work and success of the Company we want to know first-hand from the founder how did everything start and where does R.T.A stand now.

Question: Maria Grazia, how did the idea start to create R.T.A.?

Maria Grazia: It was in Summer 1988 when I decided that after almost 15 years of working for Italian, French and Spanish tour operators and incoming agencies in Spain, I had enough experience in tourism to have my own company. I saw that there were many incoming agencies representing foreign holiday + leisure tour operators, but very few local DMCs specialized on land arrangements for groups and business travel. When R.T.A. opened in Málaga in autumn 1988, the first groups from France and Italy we handled in Andalucía and were mainly leisure and round trips, but this gradually changed to corporate groups who came for events, for company meetings and incentives in Spain. The 1992 World Expo in Seville gave us the opportunity to work for international public associations, apart from numerous private corporations. At that moment R.T.A. had already grown inside Spain hosting groups not only in Marbella, Seville and Granada, but also in Madrid and – very important, Barcelona.

Question: How did the Olympic Games change the city of Barcelona?

Maria Grazia: After the 1992 Olympics and all the changes and development this city had gone through, Barcelona became the “shooting star” in Spanish tourism and in few years it was known all over Europe as a trendy city which holiday and culture travellers wanted to visit. At the same time I saw that our corporate clients, which now came mainly from Germany, Italy, France, Belgium and Austria, were very interested in organizing in Barcelona their meetings, conventions, incentives and other events.

Question: Probably the good business in Barcelona as destination made you open your own office in 2001 which is managed by your son Jonathan Schmitt Dotti?

Maria Grazia: R.T.A. handled more and more groups in Barcelona and in 2001 an office was opened, under the management of Jonathan Schmitt Dotti, who had lived since his childhood the day-by-day life of incoming tourism through me and my husband Helmut Schmitt, a long-time area manager for Southern Spain for the Spanish/German group TUI-Ultramar Express and member of several Spanish Tourist Associations.

Question: Tell me, in your opinion what is so special about Valencia?

Maria Grazia: From the Barcelona office R.T.A. served also Northern Spain, with Bilbao, the Rioja wine region and during some time the new pearl on the Spanish mainland, Valencia, where over the years an impressive infrastructure had been created by public and private initiatives, such as the City of Arts and Sciences and a wide range of 4 and 5 star hotels very well prepared for incentives, conventions and other events. In view of this development, R.T.A. decided to open also an office in Valencia.

Question: And one day you decided to create a new division specialized in the Sports Events? Explain us more about it?

Maria Grazia: Another step of expansion was the foundation of a new company to join R.T.A. group, SPORTS AND BUSINESS EVENTS, specialized in sport events as football, Formula 1, Moto GP among others. We became official supplier for FC Barcelona Football Tickets and are now in position to sell tickets for big Sport Events as Tennis, Volvo Ocean Race, Basketball World Championship and others all including all land arrangements.

Question: If you look back to 1988 when you founded RTA and see how far you got now what is your conclusion? Are you satisfied with the results?

Maria Grazia: Now, after 25 years of running my company R.T.A. I am happy to see that with our highly professional and multinational team of 25 Project Managers serving source markets in the language of the clients such as English, German, French, Italian and Portuguese, we are adding to the number of important clients from Europe and Northern America also groups coming from Brazil, India, Russia. And in addition to the mainland, we also cover the Balearic and Canary Islands. We also want to take this opportunity to thank all our long lasting clients for their trust shown in RTA year by year and hope to continue for another 25 years at least.
